Douglas Torrey, Lobsterman

Memorable event on the water

Seeing hundreds of whales at one time… or a thousand Pilot whales going onto Frenchman's Bay at a time. Took 2 or 3 hours to do it.

I was born and raised in Winter Harbor. I started lobster fishing when I was 6 years old. My grandfather, father, and four uncles are all lobstermen.

I started fishing with my grandfather who was in his 70's and had an old mackerel seining boat into which someone had installed a "make and break" engine. To stop you had to open the switch and try to catch the motor coming up and snap the switch on again to get it to release, as it had no clutch or transmission. Sometimes it worked and sometimes we hit the back of the boat. That made her leak so bad we would have to put her on a mud bark and mud her to keep her afloat. Gramp called her the "White Heifer". He died when I turned 14 and was buried on my 14th birthday. I continued to lobster with my father and then on my own.

I am a founding member of the Co-op. I've been on the Board of Directors for 10 or so years and been President for 2 years.

Meet The Captains

Every purchase you make with Winter Harbor Lobster Coop goes directly to the men and women who spend thier lives at sea catching the lobsters we all love so much. Thank you for supporting local independent fishermen and the communities they live in.
